Kercher, Xerogeanes featured in May AAOS Now

Resident Jim Kercher and Chief of Sports Medicine John Xerogeanes were featured in the May, 2008 AAOS Now for their project entitled “ACL reconstruction in the skeletally immature: An anatomic study utilizing 3-D MRI reconstruction.” The project, done in conjunction with Georgia Tech researchers, investigates the use of 3-D MRI as a way to evaluate the impact of transphyseal ACL reconstruction on the growth plate. The team utilized a software program called MAARS (Module for Adolescent ACL Reconstruction Surgery) to create a 3-D reconstruction of the tibial physis, measure the volume of the physis, and determine the percent of physis damaged by differing graft sizes and tunnel orientations. The goal was to better evaluate the degree of damage a transphyseal reconstruction does to the physis, as well as determine the optimal tunnel size and position to allow use of an interference screw for graft fixation. So far, the project has been presented at the 2008 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery Annual Meeting as well as the 2008 Southern Orthopaedic Association Annual Meeting.
