Emory Orthopedics

The academic year is comprised of various site-specific and department-wide conferences.

Some are year round, while others occur during only a portion of the year. With few exceptions, this is considered protected time for the residents, free of clinical responsibility.

Summer School

A comprehensive 10-week review beginning each academic year. Sessions are held Tuesday afternoons from 4-7 PM. Each week, a different portion of the body becomes the focus. Appropriate review articles and anatomy are assigned weekly. Attendings are present to moderate discussions. The following components make up each Summer School session:

  • Anatomic Dissection (PGY-3)
  • Case Conference (PGY-4/5)
  • OITE Review Questions (PGY-4/5)
  • Basic Science Lecture (PGY-2)

Grand Rounds, Tuesday Morning Lecture, and Wednesday Evening Lecture schedules to do not begin until the Summer School portion of the academic year has concluded.

Grand Rounds

Grand Rounds take place each Tuesday morning at 6:30 at the Emory Orthopaedics and Spine Center. Speakers are chosen from visiting faculty, Emory staff, and Chief Residents. Care is taken to choose speakers from a variety of clinical and research positions with varying areas of expertise. An effort is made to coordinate with visiting professors presenting to the Atlanta Orthopaedic Society.

Tuesday Morning Lecture

A one-hour resident or attending lecture follows grand rounds each week. These topics are based on a two-year rotating schedule that addresses all areas of clinical orthopaedics. Attendings are encouraged to remain after Grand Rounds to participate. During the fall, sessions are focused on OITE review.

Wednesday Evening Lecture

Two hours of resident and attending lectures take place each Wednesday evening. Sessions take place from 5:30-7:30 at the Emory Orthopaedics and Spine Center. Topics are based on a rotating lecture schedule with OITE review during the fall.

Morbidity and Mortality Conference

Department-wide Morbidity and Mortality conference takes place once every ten weeks at the conclusion of each rotation in lieu of Grand Rounds. Residents are expected to keep track of all complications throughout the rotation, with those offering particular learning points to be presented here. Appropriate scientific backing for clinical and surgical decision-making is stressed.

Complex Case Conference

This conference takes place once per rotation in lieu of Wednesday Evening Lecture. Residents present particularly challenging cases with a focus on different ways to view or address difficult clinical situations. Rare cases that would not be commonly seen by all residents are also presented.
