Emory Hospital

Emory HospitalEmory University Hospital is a 579-bed, tertiary care facility, staffed exclusively by 960 Emory University School of Medicine faculty. The hospital is located on the Emory University campus, and has consistently been listed as one of the nation’s top 25 hospitals. It is in close proximity to Emory’s Medical School, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, Emory’s Rehabilitation Center, and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Residents rotate at Emory as a PGY-2 and PGY-4 on the Spine service, and as a PGY-3 and PGY-5 on the Adult Reconstruction service. Call is 1:4 and taken from home.

Emory Crawford Long Hospital

Emory Crawford W Long HospitalEmory Crawford Long Hospital is a 511-bed community-based, acute care teaching facility located in Midtown Atlanta. The hospital is staffed by 600 Emory medical faculty and 800 community physicians. Resident experience at Crawford Long centers around Emory’s Orthopaedic Oncology service, comprised of two fellowship trained musculoskeletal oncologists, and, beginning in 2008, one musculoskeletal oncology fellow. Residents rotate on the service as a PGY-2 and share clinical responsibilities with a PGY-4 resident from Atlanta Medical Center. Call is 1:4 and combined with coverage of the Atlanta VA Medical Center. All call is from home.

Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center

Veterans Affairs Medical Center AtlantaThe Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center is a 173-bed tertiary hospital located approximately 1.5 miles from the main Emory Medical Campus. The facility houses state of the art equipment including paperless medical charting. The Orthopaedic service is comprised of one PGY-4 and one PGY-5 resident, as well as multiple dedicated Orthopaedic PAs who assist in seeing consults and in the clinic. Given the advanced age of the VA population, the operative experience centers around general orthopaedics, degenerative spinal disorders, and total joint arthroplasty. The VA also houses the basic science labs of several attendings, allowing ample opportunities for research. Call is 1:4 and taken in combination with Crawford Long Hospital. All call is from home.

Orthopaedics and Spine Center

Emory Orthopaedic and Spine CenterThe Emory Orthopaedics and Spine Center is located only two miles from Emory University Hospital at Executive Park. Built in 2004, this 95,000 square foot facility brings all aspects of musculoskeletal diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation together in one location. The Center houses clinic space for all faculty with the exception of the trauma service. An ambulatory surgery center features four outpatient ORs with a dedicated operative and anesthesia staff. An extensive physical therapy suite, a physiatry suite for spinal injections and minor procedures, and a prosthetics and orthotics department are also housed here. Emory’s musculoskeletal radiology division is based within the Orthopaedics and Spine Center, with plain radiographs, ultrasound, CT, and MRI easily available. The orthopaedic library/conference room is utilized throughout the year for Grand Rounds and resident didactic sessions. The Emory Orthopaedic and Spine Center has served as a model for similar centers built around the country.

Grady Memorial Hospital

Grady Memorial HospitalGrady Memorial Hospital is a 953-bed acute care teaching hospital located in downtown Atlanta. Established in 1892 as a 110-bed facility, Grady has grown tremendously throughout the years serving as the cornerstone of care for Atlanta’s inner city and indigent populations. Grady is known as the premier trauma center in the State of Georgia, and is the only Level I trauma center in the greater Atlanta area. Residents rotate through Grady during every year of their residency. In addition to Trauma, dedicated specialists in Sports Medicine, Hand & Upper Extremity, Foot & Ankle, Spine, and Adult Reconstruction serve on Grady’s staff, providing residents excellent exposure to all areas of orthopaedics. Call is 1:4 as a junior-level resident and taken in-house. Senior level call is 1:5 and taken from home.

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston

Childrens Healthare of Atlanta - EglestonEgleston Children’s Hospital is one of three Atlanta pediatric hospitals run by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. A 235-bed facility, Egleston is one of only two Pediatric Trauma centers in the state of Georgia. It is located directly across the street from Emory University Hospital on Clifton Road. Residents rotate through Egleston during their PGY-3 and PGY-4 years on the Pediatric Orthopaedics Service. Experience at Egleston involves but is not limited to pediatric orthopaedic trauma, idiopathic and congenital disorders of the spine and lower extremity, and pediatric sports medicine. Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta has consistently been recognized as one of the nation’s leaders in Pediatric Orthopaedics, with over 3,900 surgeries done annually. Call at Egleston is 1:4 and taken from home.

Piedmont Hospital

Piedmont Hospital

Piedmont Hospital is a private, 481-bed, tertiary hospital lying in the Buckhead region of Atlanta. Residents rotate through as both PGY-3s and PGY-5s with community physicians specializing in hand and upper extremity surgery.

The majority of the operative experience is in the outpatient setting. Residents take no call at Piedmont Hospital.
